Let Them Eat Carrots!
It’s all coming together now at Debub Grade 1-8 Community School – an imagine1day supported school.
Over a year ago imagine1day began working with the school in Debub. As a supported school Debub had classroom buildings that were built by the government but lacked sufficient programming, training and resources.
Enter: imagine1day with desks, training for the teachers, reading corners, seeds to begin agriculture income generating activities, sports materials, a fresh-water point and much more.
Yesterday, the imagine1day field team visited Debub to see how things were going and were blown away to find over 1.5 hectares of land behind the school being used for income generating activities!
Planted with fenugreek (local grain), potatoes, onions, lettuce, beetroot and carrots the school administration expects that they will earn over 80,000 birr from this year’s harvest!
Their plans for the money? To invest in replacing various classroom materials for their students but also to buy a mini-bus in order to more easily transport their produce to markets around the region! A bigger market = more sales = more profits = more investment in other income generating activities = more to sell = a bigger market = …well you get the idea!
Washing the freshly harvested carrots at the school’s new water point while overlooking the volleyball court where a group of girls were batting a ball around, the team couldn’t help but smile – it’s all coming together now!
Debub’s income generating activities are just one of the many examples of schools flourishing when given a little bit of guidance from imagine1day.
